Joanna Sarapata is a graduate of the esteemed L'ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her works have been recognized by the school, with eleven of her pieces being included in their archives.
In addition to painting, Joanna has also explored scenography and poster design. Notably, in 1986, she won the top prize in a prestigious poster competition organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris.
Since 1987, she has been exhibiting her works, showcasing them in various countries such as France, where she lived and worked for almost two decades, as well as Spain, Monaco, Italy, the USA, and Switzerland. Her artworks have also been displayed in Poland since 1998.
Joanna Sarapata is renowned for her large-format pieces, which can be found in collections around the world. Notable figures like Jose Carreras, Elton John, and Madonna count themselves as admirers of her art.
One of the recurring themes in her work is the portrayal of the female figure, capturing the complexity and mystery of feminine nature. Often, she depicts women who are both strong and independent, yet also remarkably sensitive. Critics describe her work as a personal exploration of the multifaceted aspects of womanhood, capturing its complexity and unpredictability.
The artist emphasizes that she paints with emotions, infusing her works with passions, dreams, as well as moments of uncertainty and sadness. According to her, true beauty in a woman lies in embracing her femininity. Sarapata finds inspiration in the atmosphere of European cities, cinema, music, and literature. She primarily works on canvas or cardboard, employing various techniques such as oil, watercolor, ink, brushes, or feathers. Through her skilled use of mixed media, her paintings possess a light and are ethereal.
A distinctive characteristic of Joanna Sarapata’s art is her portrayal of women without eyes, inviting viewers to interpret their emotions and engage in a contemplative experience. In Joanna Sarapaty's work, it is the body, its posture, pose, and gesture that express the mood, hidden desires, and dilemmas.
